Rest in Peace Good Time Charlie Brechtel

This morning, April 26th, 2020, I received the terrible news that Guitarist Charlie Brechtel was taken from us as a result of a motorcycle accident. Our hearts goes out to his family.

I’ve been attending Charlie’s shows for at least 20 something years. I first met him in Daytona during Bikeweek, possibly 1999 or 2000, then he popped into our industry party at the Blue Grotto (Daytona), guitar in hand, and joined in with the band we hired that night and blew the house away. We had Dan Lawson playing for our guests who as well is a master at the guitar, but Charlie & Dan played like two brothers, note for note, seamless good old blues & rock. Moving forward a handful of years, I began shooting more & more at the Buffalo Chip in Sturgis thanks to Marilyn Stemp and our work together on Iron Trader News. Being part of the Buffalo Chip family means the world to me, not many get to experience what I do, and I appreciate every moment of that. So, Charlie is a regular at the Chip, when I check the shooting schedule, I ALWAYS checked for the Charlie Berchtel Band first. I’m posting a few images here in this post, but I have hundreds more. If you are reading this and are curious about his musical style, he was a master of blues and good old fashion rock. I’ve shot with Charlie with no one watching, and with thousands in attendance. His music, his way of being, drew you in, made you feel like part of the band. Heavy rain, extreme winds… didn’t matter, he never left the stage. I think you get the picture, I’ll post some more images below, feel free to share them, copy them for yourself.

These kinds of legacies don’t happen by accident, they are a super group, extremely talented musicians with a history like no other. FOREIGNER AT THE BUFFALO CHIP, THEY ROCKED THE HOUSE DOWN!

Last night was epic, Foreigner, both the original group and present group played to tens of thousands of bikers last night at the Buffalo Chip. John Kay and Steppenwolf Bring Heavy Metal Thunder to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®

1Iconic motorcycle rock band to bring Chip fans back to the dawn of motorcycle culture as it’s known today.

 Sturgis, SD – Motorcycle and music fans will have the chance to see true living legends at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip this August when John Kay and Steppenwolf bring their heavy metal thunder to the Wolfman Jack Stage on Friday, Aug. 10. Steppenwolf changed the rock ‘n’ roll landscape and the world of motorcycling forever. Their songs featured in the biker culture classic “Easy Rider” became synonymous with riding and rebellion. Steppenwolf is the original biker band and is credited with spawning an entire genre of music when singer John Kay coined the term “heavy metal” in the lyrics “heavy metal thunder”. The band’s music gave the world of motorcycling the impetus for many a road trip with anthems that include “Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride.” Classic hits like “Rock Me,” “The Pusher” and “Jupiter’s Child” became engrained in the hearts of bikers everywhere.

STURGIS-BUFFALO-CHIP-STEPPENWOLF-740x400“When these guys said ‘Get Your Motors Runnin’, they inspired a movement and became the soundtrack for bike nights, garage sessions and hangouts for generations,” said Rod Woodruff, President of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “It just doesn’t get any more authentic than John Kay and Steppenwolf on the largest stage in motorcycling. They are the real deal. This will be the biker event of the year.”

The headlining performance by John Kay & Steppenwolf is the most recent of three huge names to sign on to perform at the Buffalo Chip in 2018. Eric Church is scheduled to perform Wednesday, Aug. 8 followed by Kid Rock on Thursday, Aug. 9. Many more world-class bands will be announced soon.

In additional to musical entertainment, the Buffalo Chip TT American Flat Track race will take place in the amphitheater on Sunday, Aug. 5. The annual concert and event series, known as the “Best Party Anywhere®,” will begin on Friday, Aug. 3 and run through Sunday, Aug. 12, 2018.
