There are several events that I look forward to yearly, and the Philadelphia Veteran’s Day Parade is near tops on the list. With a mixture of hundreds of bikers, dignitaries, vets from WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Vets from all of the most recent wars, along with a supporting cast of military honor guards, drill teams, young future recruits, and so on, it’s just a great day of celebration.
What do I enjoy the most from this gathering? Well I arrive early, sometimes too early (but that’s just me), but I walk through the gathering point and I make it a goal to speak with the groups that participate because each has a wonderful story of why they are together and attending. However, when I spot an older Vet in uniform or close to, I enjoy more than anything, having the pleasure of striking up a conversation of their time served. Some of the stories I have heard are simply priceless and afterwards, I’m able to stay in communication with some, usually through a family member. But to be able to talk to a 95 year old Marine who still clearly remembers Iwo Jima from 1945… I mean WOW.
