COVID-19 Update: Sturgis Rally 80th Moving Forward as Planned

Reported by Sturgis.com

As we prepare for the 80th Sturgis Rally Anniversary, we would like to take a moment to let you know that we are monitoring the coronavirus situation closely.

Since the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is put on by many different venues and organizations, and not owned by any one organization, we will keep an updated list of all the Sturgis Rally venues that have publicly stated their position in regard to the coronavirus below.

No Sturgis Rally Venues Have Postponed or Canceled Any Events.

All concerts, events and activities are on schedule for late summer. We are planning on having a great celebration come August 7th.

The good news continues to be that, according to U.S. health officials, the overall coronavirus risk remains low, and healthy individuals can still travel within the United States with no travel restrictions.

We look forward to seeing you August 7-15, 2020 for the 80th Sturgis Rally.

Organizations that have made public statements about 80th Sturgis Rally and the coronavirus so far include:

  • Sturgis Buffalo Chip – Moving forward as planned

2020 Youth Build Kickoff

Words and photos compliments of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame
Tuesday night was the kick off for the 2020 youth motorcycle build scholarship program, Lonnie’s Heart, a 501c3 non-profit within the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum. This year 6 students from Sturgis Brown High School will participate in the program, transforming a 2015 H-D Heritage Softail into a custom cholo or vicla style motorcycle. Students that participate throughout the entire program and demonstrate enthusiasm and passion for learning will earn college scholarships. The program is open to all high school students in the northern Black Hills but for the second year in a row, only Sturgis students applied. The 2020 build will be lead by Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Hall of Fame Inductee Keith Terry and well known builder Patrick Garvin.

In 2019 students built a custom softail with a modern boardtracker vibe, complete with a 26″ front wheel and a 23″ rear wheel. That motorcycle sold at Mecum Auction in January garnering $35,000 for the scholarship program. A small portion of that money will be used toward the 2020 build and the remaining dollars will be used to support future scholarships.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and the World’s Best Motorcycle Builders Join Legendary Sturgis Buffalo Chip® Lineup in 2020

80th Anniversary of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

Sturgis, SD (February 14, 2020) Few entities and people have stood the test of time and can rightfully be called legendary like those joining the Sturgis Buffalo Chip lineup today. The Buffalo Chip’s self-proclaimed house band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, is continuing a legendary tradition by finishing off their 40-plus year career with an ultimate send-off on the Wolfman Jack Stage on Sunday, Aug. 9. This is Skynyrd’s second stop at the Chip as part of their three-year “Farewell Tour.” In keeping with the theme, 36 of the world’s most celebrated motorcycle builders have accepted Michael Lichter’s invitation to create and display a motorcycle in the style of their choosing for the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s 2020 Motorcycles as Art exhibit titled “Heavy Mettle: Motorcycles and Art with Moxie.” All invited builders have completed at least 20 custom builds and been in business for at least 20 years. The one-time exhibit will also feature photographs captured by Lichter over his 40 plus-year career. The exhibit is free and open to the public at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Event Center from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 through Friday, Aug. 14, 2020.
