John Kay and Steppenwolf Bring Heavy Metal Thunder to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip®

1Iconic motorcycle rock band to bring Chip fans back to the dawn of motorcycle culture as it’s known today.

Sturgis, SD – Motorcycle and music fans will have the chance to see true living legends at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip this August when John Kay and Steppenwolf bring their heavy metal thunder to the Wolfman Jack Stage on Friday, Aug. 10. Steppenwolf changed the rock ‘n’ roll landscape and the world of motorcycling forever. Their songs featured in the biker culture classic “Easy Rider” became synonymous with riding and rebellion. The official announcement video can be seen here: www.BuffaloChip.com/BANDS.

Steppenwolf is the original biker band and is credited with spawning an entire genre of music when singer John Kay coined the term “heavy metal” in the lyrics “heavy metal thunder”. The band’s music gave the world of motorcycling the impetus for many a road trip with anthems that include “Born to be Wild” and “Magic Carpet Ride.” Classic hits like “Rock Me,” “The Pusher” and “Jupiter’s Child” became engrained in the hearts of bikers everywhere.

STURGIS-BUFFALO-CHIP-STEPPENWOLF-740x400“When these guys said ‘Get Your Motors Runnin’, they inspired a movement and became the soundtrack for bike nights, garage sessions and hangouts for generations,” said Rod Woodruff, President of the Sturgis Buffalo Chip. “It just doesn’t get any more authentic than John Kay and Steppenwolf on the largest stage in motorcycling. They are the real deal. This will be the biker event of the year.”

The headlining performance by John Kay & Steppenwolf is the most recent of three huge names to sign on to perform at the Buffalo Chip in 2018. Eric Church is scheduled to perform Wednesday, Aug. 8 followed by Kid Rock on Thursday, Aug. 9. Many more world-class bands will be announced soon.

In additional to musical entertainment, the Buffalo Chip TT American Flat Track race will take place in the amphitheater on Sunday, Aug. 5. MUSEUM ON THE MOVE

1Sturgis Motorcycle Museum & Hall Of Fame Expands To Two Campuses

Sturgis, South Dakota, October 24, 2017 – The Sturgis Rally may be over, but things are just getting started for the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame. The Museum is set to double within three years, and the Hall of Fame portion will have its own campus. Meanwhile the Main Street location will get a major revitalization, courtesy of generous donations from supporters, Board members and the Law Tigers.
“It’s been a busy summer,” says Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Executive Director Myrick Robbins. “Scott Peterson, of Scott Peterson Ford, has donated land for the second, larger Museum site,” notes Robbins. “This site will be off of Exit 32 and visible from the I-90. The Law Tigers are jump starting the building fund to ensure that the aggressive expansion plans are met, donating more than $100K to our capital campaign building fund,” he adds. “Our Museum is growing and within three years, the Hall of Fame portion will have its own campus near exit 32.”
“We are honored to be part of motorcycle history,” said Ari Levenbaum, on behalf of The Law Tigers, a professional association of motorcycle injury lawyers who help riders every day. “There are some amazing motorcycles on display and incredible heritage that needs to be shared with riders.”
In addition to the donation of the site by Scott Peterson and the funding from the Law Tigers, Board Member Bruce Eide generously donated the fees for the architectural design firm, 4FrontDesign, Inc. They have completed the preliminary plans for the second site. The larger building will house the Hall of Fame, pre-1938 collection and various galleries. “The overall facility will give the Museum space to offer educational programs, meeting and event space and a place for the community and visitors to experience motorcycling, learn about the great people of the Hall of Fame and their heritage,” notes Robbins.
Key features include:
  • Permanent Collections Displays
  • Featured Galleries
  • Cafe
  • Meeting Rooms
  • Gift Shop
  • Restoration and Training Areas
  • Various outdoor areas
“With the donations continuing to roll in, we have continued the expansion plans for the current Main and Junction through the 1500 Rider program,” says Robbins. “With the building maintenance up to speed and the permit process in motion, we have been working toward the expansion to continue to provide the downtown anchor and connection to the most famous Main Street in Motorcycling.”
Completion for Campus 1 – “Legendary Main Street” – is July 2019. Campus 2 -“Heritage Hill” – is planned to be completed in time for the 80th Anniversary in 2020. “Your support is key in getting these important programs finished.  We are proud to be supported by you and the community of riders.”
