During a recent interview with a government official an MSNBC correspondent asked about rumors that motorcycle owners were being placed on a classified FBI gang list. The official confirmed that the FBI has been collecting Department of Motor Vehicles and Drivers License Division records so they could compile a list of people that own motorcycles. Those names were then added to the FBI’s classified gang list which it started in 1994.
The official tried to rationalize the practice by saying that motorcyclists are “67% more likely to be involved in illegal or criminal activity” than non-riders. The official also used an analogy that law enforcement officers should know beforehand if the operator of a vehicle is a registered gun owner before he approaches it. He said that both situations are interchangeable in the eyes of National and Homeland Security.
Are you on the list? If you registered a motorcycle or were licensed to ride a motorcycle between 1994 and 2015 congratulations, you’re on file with the FBI (did they include the lawfully elected Federal government officials who ride). Yes its profiling and yes its wrong, but we’re talking national security here. BTW there’s a chance that a future employer may see your name on that list during background checks. Something to think about all you bad boy bikers out there. Wonder if everyone who bought SOA gear is on a double super secret list?
