Sturgis Buffalo Chip®’s Moto Stampede® Race Series Expands Diverse Schedule of Races

The epicenter of rally events adds multiple days of racing action at the Largest Music Festival in MotorcyclingTM.

Sturgis, SD (April 21, 2017) More adrenaline-packed racing events have this year been added to the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Moto Stampede race series at the premier action center of the rally. Six of the motorcycle and music festival’s nine days offers thrilling racing from American Flat Track and RSD Super Hooligan to street drags, Dirt Riot Off-Road, and AMA Supermoto. Audiences will have an up-close viewing experience with concert pairings they won’t find in any other venue in the world. One pass includes access to Moto Stampede races, all concerts and events held within the campground and tent camping. Passes may be purchased for each day with multi-day packages offering the best value. More info can be found here.

“The rally was founded on racing. The Buffalo Chip’s Moto Stampede pairs multiple days and types of races with the rally’s biggest concerts to create a series of events neither the rally nor the world has ever before seen,” said Rod Woodruff, Sturgis Buffalo Chip President. “We intend to shake the ground with excitement and horsepower. That’s why it’s called the Moto Stampede!”

The Moto Stampede offers the industry’s most concentrated series of motorsports events:

Dirt Riot Off-Road Racing

Off-road racers in UTV, Ultra Four Car and Truck Super Mod Trail classes will tear up the award-winning track at the Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex on Friday, Aug. 4 and Saturday, Aug. 5. Entry to the Aug. 4 time trials is free. Championships on Aug. 5 are ticketed separately from campground events and passes are $20.

American Flat Track® AMA Pro Racing Sanctioned Races

AFT racing action will take place on Sunday, Aug. 6, sending the nation’s top professional racing athletes through the new Buffalo Chip TT track that winds through the center of the venue’s famous amphitheater. Indian Wrecking Crew revives the long-held rivalry with Harley-Davisdon’s Factory Crew in a battle fans are referring to as “The Hundred Years War.” Shinedown will perform on the Wolfman Jack Stage immediately following the races.

Street Drag Invitational Races with Crazy John

Crazy John Markwald will be back to pit even more of his friends in head-to-head hat drop street races down the middle of the Buffalo Chip amphitheater on Wednesday, Aug. 9 during the Buffalo Chip Street Drag Invitational with Crazy John.

RSD Super Hooligan Races

Immediately following the street drags Roland Sands and his crew will go handlebar to handlebar in the RSD Super Hooligan races presented by Indian Motorcycle. Passes include the performance by Ozzy Osbourne along with other headliners on the main stage that evening.

AMA Supermoto Races

This high-energy race hybrid will bring Sturgis Buffalo Chip campers face to face with the ultimate “through-the-streets” style racing on Friday, Aug. 11 and Saturday, Aug. 12 as racers fly around a one-of-a-kind Supermoto track that cuts through both the amphitheater and the streets in the surrounding campground. The top racing talent in the country including reigning and 3x National Champion, Gage McAllister and #2 and #3 ranked racers will attend. Alter Bridge will perform after the AMA Supermoto races along with other headlining bands yet to be announced.

Smith Bests Mees as Indian Takes Third Straight AFT Win Next: a 6-week break before the Miles

2CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 1, 2017) – Defending American Flat Track Grand National Champion Bryan Smith scored his first victory of the season in the AFT Twins class presented by Vance & Hines on Saturday evening at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. It was a dominant win for Smith (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) beating fellow Indian Motorcycle rider Jared Mees (No. 9 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing Indian Scout FTR750) by 3.769 seconds to put an end to his rival’s win streak going into the break.

“We didn’t qualify fastest, but once we got racing, I felt comfortable,” said Smith. “I feel like in any race if I can beat Jared (Mees), I can win the race, and if I beat him, I can win the championship. I’ve got to get back to doing it more often. I especially wanted to win today, because we’ve got some bragging rights going into the mini off-season before we get to the miles. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off last year in the miles – winning.”

Mees would have preferred to add another win to the ones he racked up at the Harley-Davidson DAYTONA TT and Atlanta Short Track presented by Indian Motorcycle at Dixie Speedway, but at the end of the day Mees leaves Charlotte with an eight-point lead in the championship. The evening also marked Indian Motorcycle’s third consecutive 1-2 finish, which could’ve very well been another back-to-back podium sweep if Smith’s teammate Brad Baker on the No. 6 Indian Scout FTR750 hadn’t suffered the bad luck of a mechanical before the halfway mark.

“You can’t win them all, and I was glad to see Bryan (Smith) get the job done on the Indian Motorcycle,” Mees said. “So far, Indian’s won all three Grand Nationals. It’s a shame for Brad (Baker), because I think we would have had an all-Indian podium again. The best guy won tonight, and it was Bryan.”

Joining the Indian Motorcycle duo on the podium was Sammy Halbert on the No. 69 Estenson Logistics Harley-Davidson XR750R. Halbert went into Charlotte looking for the win that slipped his grasp last weekend in Atlanta, but was happy to leave with a podium finish for his new team.

“It felt good to get up on the podium. First podium of the year, first one with the new team,” Halbert said. “These guys, Estenson Racing, have been putting in so much hard work so it feels great to reward them with a podium.”

AFT Twins rookie Ryan Wells (No. 94 BriggsAuto.com Harley-Davidson XR750R) bounced back from a pair of mechanical issues at the previous rounds to take his best finish thus far in fourth. Completing the top five was Jeffrey Carver Jr. (No. 23 Carver’s BBQ Kawasaki Ninja 650). Leading the Harley-Davidson Factory team was Kenny Coolbeth Jr. (No. 2 Harley-Davidson XG750R) in sixth.

Gauthier Captures Third Straight Win In AFT Singles
Dalton Gauthier (No. 22 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ 450F) took his third consecutive victory in AFT Singles competition, leading flag-to-flag in a race slowed by a pair of red flags for multi-bike incidents. The Pennsylvanian pulled away on both restarts and led Brandon Price (No. 92 Kawaski) to the checkered flag by 1.035 seconds.

Shayna Texter (No. 52 Richie Morris Racing Honda CRF450R) took third, capturing her second consecutive podium finish.

The Harley-Davidson Charlotte Half-Mile will be aired on NBCSN on Monday, July 17, at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT.

After competing on three consecutive weekends, American Flat Track now takes a six-week break before its next event, the Law Tigers Arizona Mile presented by Indian Motorcycle on Saturday, May 13, at Turf Paradise in Phoenix. That race begins a four-week stretch of consecutive races on Mile tracks. Last year, Smith scored three of his four victories en route to the title on Mile tracks.
