OUR VISIT TO BARBIE THE WELDER’S SHOP DURING DAYTONA BIKE WEEK

During Daytona bike week, we visited Barbie The Welder at her evening open house. It was great to see her in her natural habitat, and to view her work in the space where she creates it.

Barbie The Welder is an American sculptor, author, and educator who transforms raw and reclaimed metal into sculptures with character, strength, and presence.

After seeing the woman welding angel wings in the film Cast Away starring Tom Hanks, Barbie enrolled in welding school in 2007. She spent several years working in a custom fabrication shop, earning her Journeyman certification in iron plate and sheet metal and developing the technical foundation that would later shape her sculpture.

At night and on weekends, Barbie returned home to her one-car garage in Erin, New York, where she taught herself to design and create metal art.

In 2014, Barbie started her career as a full-time artist. In 2015, she began teaching others how to weld art on YouTube, and in 2017 her first of several books was published.

Today, working from her studio in Ormond Beach, Florida, Barbie continues to create handcrafted metal sculptures while building a global community of creative men and women who value craftsmanship and the art of making.

Barbie’s work is held in private collections and select collaborations including Harley-Davidson, Burger King, and The American Welding Society.

Below is a gallery of images from that evening.
