As you fill in your calendar for 2017 make sure to note the dates of American Flat Track racing – the hottest two-wheeled racing you’ll encounter in 2017. AMA Pro Racing rebranded the American Flat Track (AFT) series – formerly known as AMA Pro Flat Track – late last fall and the 2017 schedule includes additional race events, meaning there’s a good chance one happens near you. If you want to be where in the loop, especially pay attention to the two items in bold below.
According to the AMA, “The rebranding of the series coincides with the dawn of a new era for America’s favorite motorcycle sport, which includes a restructured class system as well as a re-envisioning of the event format. While holding true to the legacy of a sport rich in history, the modifications are designed to provide a more understandable and exciting format for the modern fans and make the series more accessible to new fans. “We are extremely excited about the rebranding of the series,” said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. “It’s a very exciting time for the sport of professional Flat Track racing.”
The restructured class system consists of the AFT Twins class, the premier class where the best Flat Track riders in the world battle for top honors on fire-breathing Twins, and the AFT Singles class, which will host dirt track racing’s stars of tomorrow.
The season opens March 16th under the lights at Daytona International Speedway with the Daytona TT, on a brand new .6-mile track designed by seven-time Grand National Champion Chris Carr. Later, on August 6, be inside the amphitheater at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip for the new Buffalo Chip TT race presented by Indian Motorcycle. If you were lucky enough to witness the Hooligan and drag races at the Chip in 2016, this year’s racing will be double pumped up.
Better still, AFT racing in 2017 brings the vaunted Harley and Indian wars of racing lore right back to the forefront. Indian upped the ante hugely by recruiting and signing the sport’s top three riders to form the NEW Indian Wrecking Crew. Just after Harley’s Brad Baker won the Santa Rosa Mile, Indian announced that Baker, Jared Mees and Bryan Smith (the 2016 Grand national Champ) had been signed, bringing Indian to AMA Pro Flat Track racing with its first factory racing effort since 1953.
