The American Motorcyclist Association’s ATV Extreme Dirt Racing has awarded the Buffalo Chip’s PowerSports Complex the honor of “Track of the Year” for 2014. Racers participating in the national series, along with EDT officials, chose the Buffalo Chip as their hands-down favorite after being asked to vote for the best overall track and facility. This was the first year for the track, which was constructed by TORC: The Off-Road Championship Racing Series, expert track builder Jeff Nordstrom. EDT President Tom Coburn, Vice President Bob Loshbaugh and American Motorcyclist Association’s Road Riding Coordinator, Rob Baughman, arrived Wednesday to present the prestigious award to Buffalo Chip President Rod Woodruff.
The AMA selected the Sturgis Buffalo Chip’s PowerSports Complex to host the 2014 championship finale of its ATV Extreme Dirt Track Nationals. The series traveled to New York, Sioux Falls, North Carolina, Ohio and Oklahoma, before concluding with the grand finale race at South Dakota’s Sturgis Buffalo Chip Aug. 8 and 9, 2014.
“It is an incredible track,” said Tom Coburn, President of the AMA ATV Extreme Dirt Track National Series. “The riders were not very excited about the location. It was the first year for the track, and they had doubts that the extra travel would be worth the effort. But after just one time around the track they were raving about it and voted it the best track of the year very nearly unanimously. We are excited to make this a regular location in our annual series.”
Drawn by the $6,000 pro purses, in addition to the amateur prizes, the races attracted about 150 ATV Flat Track racers from all across the nation. Flat Track TT racing has been described as Grand Prix, NASCAR and Motocross all performed on all-terrain vehicles in a stadium setting. The ATVs can hit speeds of 75-80 mph in a matter of seconds.
“We are very honored by this award,” said Rod Woodruff, Buffalo Chip President. “We knew the track was great, but when the racers themselves voted it as the best track in the country, that said a lot. It’s thrilling to see them fly around those curves and over the jumps; I can only imagine what it feels like to actually be on the vehicle. The credit really goes to BJ Birtwell, President of TORC and their track builder, Jeff Nordstrom for their partnership and commitment to building a superior track. The real award goes to them, we just gave the people what they wanted and a place where they can all go to see the world’s greatest moto sports in one place.”
The Buffalo Chip PowerSports Complex will again host both the AMA ATV Extreme Dirt Track Nationals and The Off-Road Championships in August 2015 during the 75th anniversary of the Sturgis Rally.
